Background: Is Somervell County Hospital District trying to strong arm Somervell County Commissioners into giving away the EMS services to them? (Updated 12/17/2023) Somervell County Hospital District Board President admits that Somervell County EMS has no duty to make a patient transfer, but Glen Rose Medical Center does . More on Somervell County EMS ambulance proposal to Somervell County Hospital District (Glen Rose Medical Center)

Glen Rose Medical Center, apparently on January 19, 2024, entered into an agreement with Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department & EMS. In light of that contract, Somervell County Fire/EMS entered into a Mutual Aid Agreement with Pecan Fire/EMS. In case Pecan cannot take emergencies, Somervell County Fire/EMS will step in. Somervell County Fire/EMS has been doing so since Feb 12, 2024. Judge Chambers made the motion that Somervell County Commissioners Court discontinue any further negotiations with GRMC to provide their emergency transfers. “Because what we were at, it was going to cost us about $442,000 a year and then they were going to pay $422,000. .. Contract they [GRMC] has now saves Somervell County taxpayers roughly $422,000 a year. We commend them on what they have done. .. we authorize them into entering those MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) .”

Emphasizing this. Somervell County Hospital District dba Glen Rose Medical Center has a contract for EMS service with Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department & EMS; SCHD NOT have a contract with Somervell County Commissioners Court. In turn, Somervell County Fire/EMS has a MOU with Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Dept & EMS, NOT Somervell County Hospital District for backup emergency service. Looks to me that SCHD didn’t want to pay Somervell County $422,000 a year; by my calculation, the deal between PP and SCHD as going to be a total of $240,000 versus the $422,000 Somervell County suggested paying (which was even a good deal since it costs Somervell County $442,000 a year). If Somervell County Fire/EMS gets a referral from PP, for emergency transfers, SCFE keeps the fee.(See the MOU below)

Trey Brown, county attorney, emphasized whose burden it is to provide emergency service for the hospital (also in video above and clipped just that part because well said)
