Some quick thoughts about SCOTUS and presidential immunity
First, I am again depressed that my idea of having a noble supreme court that cared about the law and the people of this country is again dashed. I also used to think that very smart attorneys were put in as justices and Thomas and Alito prove that is not true. I previously thought Thomas was the dumbest one on the court, but nope, he’s just the most unethical. Why was he even sitting in on his case yesterday when his wife was one of those attempting to overthrow the govt on Jan 6? And Alito is just a whiny dumb guy.
While considering whether Donald Trump should be granted complete immunity — as in king-like status — Alito, incredibly, suggested that prosecuting an outgoing president who tries to overthrow an election would be anti-democratic. Or, conversely, presidents who use anti-democratic tactics to topple U.S. democracy should be protected.
Alito’s bizarre MAGA-style reasoning was summed up in a question to special counsel Jack Smith’s attorney Michael Dreeben today, when he asked, “Now, if an incumbent who loses a very close, hotly contested election, knows that a real possibility after leaving office is not that the president is going to be able to go off into a peaceful retirement, but that the president may be criminally prosecuted by a bitter political opponent, will that not lead us into a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country as a democracy?”
Apparently, in Alito’s upside-down alternative world, Trump was “the president” seeking to ride off in the sunset toward his “peaceful retirement” — back into the White House.
But then Trump’s “bitter opponent,” aka President Biden and the Democratic party, dared to object to his authoritarian tactics (e.g., encouraging an insurrection and concocting the Big Lie) in his quest to destabilize democracy and appoint himself as untouchable dictator. And for that, the Democrats are leading us “into a cycle” that destabilizes democracy.
More on Alito-who truly is an ignorant kook
Also, Roberts said something that sounded extremely clueless about grand juries and whether their indictments were valid-I mean, that is our justice system, if somebody doesn’t like it if it seems like people get indicted too easily by a grand jury AT ALL LEVELS, then FIX it don[t use it an excuse to look like you’re trying to favor a former president
Trump’s attorney AGAIN argued that if a president commits a crime, it’s all okay. Suppose Trump used Seal Team 6 to assassinate a rival. Ugh. This is wacko
There was some talk with sCOTUS between private and public acts.
Kavanaugh seemed to think Americans are cool with Gerald Ford having pardoned Nixon. Nope. Not even close. That was disgusting at the time and in fact, despite whatever ivory tower Kavanaugh lives in, most are STILL not okay with it.
Kavanaugh or maybe it was Gorsuch seemed to be thinking about what this case would do for generations to come. I heard thought and thought, okay, so stare decisis. I don’t believe or trust them since they was pretty quick to ditch Roe v Wade and it looks like nutjobs like Alito are trying to get rid of other settled cases.
