I don’t know the answer to this but surely there are local people who are on Medicare that will suffer.. ?
Houston Chronicle Editorial from July 1 2025
The Trump budget bill currently making its way through Congress would close a loophole that states use to maximize federal subsidies for hospitals — meaning less money for hospitals.
And at the same time, new work requirements to receive Medicaid would effectively deny health care coverage to millions of people — meaning that more uninsured people will show up at hospitals needing care. According to the association, under the House version of the bill, total cuts to Medicaid reimbursements to rural hospitals would reach almost $70 billion. The Senate version has even deeper cuts, axing some $1 trillion from Medicaid.
“In more than half of states, reductions in Medicaid funding for rural hospitals would exceed 20%,” says the National Rural Health Association. Hospital closures are bound to follow.
